How to play never have I ever

  1. Set up. Choose 2 to 12 players, a category (or Everything) and whether you want the five-fingers score. Add names if you like.
  2. Read the statement. The phone shows one sentence that starts with “Never have I ever”. Whoever holds the phone reads it out loud.
  3. Own up. Anyone who has done it taps their name. In the five-fingers game each tap costs a finger, and each player starts with five.
  4. Tell the story. Before the next statement, ask the people who own up to explain. The stories are the real game.
  5. Keep going until someone is the last one standing. A player with no fingers left is out. When one player is left, the game ends and shows the final count.

Turn scoring off when you only want the statements. The phone then deals one after another, and nobody is eliminated.

Never have I ever for friends, family and work

With friends

Choose Everything and switch scoring on. The friends and embarrassing categories get the loudest reactions. Add the grown-up statements only if everyone at the table is an adult or an older teen and agrees.

With family and kids

Start with childhood, animals and food. Let the youngest player read the statements aloud, and skip any that do not fit the room. Hand the phone to a grandparent for the childhood category.

At school or work

The school and work category avoids names, bosses and anything about pay. Play a few rounds without scoring as a warm-up for a team meeting, or as a break between lessons.

As a couple

Two players works fine. Use the five-fingers score to see who has done more, and swap in the grown-up statements for a date night. They stay at PG-13.

Four ways to change the game

  • Guess first. Before anyone owns up, everyone writes down who they think has done it. Compare the guesses with the real answers.
  • Story round. Only the people who have done the thing may speak. Each gets thirty seconds to tell it.
  • Team fingers. Split into two teams and add up each team’s fingers at the end.
  • Pick a category. Play only the travel statements on a trip, or only the animal ones at a farm party.

Want something quicker with no scoring? Try This or That or the would you rather game.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play never have I ever?

One player reads a statement that starts with “Never have I ever”. Everyone who has done it puts a finger down. On this page the phone reads the statements and keeps the finger count for you.

How do you win never have I ever?

In the five-fingers version, you win by keeping fingers up. Everyone starts with five and drops one for each statement they have done. You are out at zero, and the last player with fingers left wins. You can also switch scoring off and play for the stories.

Is this a drinking game?

Some groups play it with drinks. This version does not need any, and the main set is written for mixed company: no alcohol, drugs or anything you would not read out at a family table.

Can kids play?

Yes. Everything in the main set is family-friendly, so ages 10 and up can play with parents at the table. The childhood, animals and food categories are the gentlest. The optional grown-up statements stay switched off unless someone ticks the box.

How many people can play?

From 2 to 12 on one phone. Five to eight players keeps the turns quick and the stories varied.

What are the grown-up statements?

An optional set of 36 statements about dating, work and money, kept to PG-13. They are loaded only after you tick Add grown-up statements, and they are not part of the lists on this page.

Does the site save my answers?

No. Names and finger counts exist only on the page while you play and disappear when you reload. The privacy page lists what the site stores.
