How to play this or that

  1. Choose the players and a set. Pick 2 to 10 players and one of ten sets, or Everything.
  2. Read the pair. The phone shows two options and names whose turn it is.
  3. Tap your pick. The bars fill in with the share of players who picked each side.
  4. Pass the phone. The next player sees a new pair. Anyone can argue with a pick.

The game ends when you run out of pairs in the set you chose. Stop sooner whenever the group runs out of steam.

Four ways to play this or that

  • Predict. Before you tap, guess which side the person on your left will pick. One point for a match.
  • Floor is lava. Everyone stands in the middle of the room, and each side of the pair is a wall. Walk to your pick.
  • Explain it. The player in the minority gets ten seconds to defend their pick.
  • Speed round. Two seconds per pair. Whoever hesitates picks again.

When the picks get serious, switch to would you rather, or try never have I ever for stories.

Frequently asked questions

What is the this or that game?

A quick choice between two things, such as pancakes or waffles. You pick one, say why if anyone asks, and move on. Unlike would you rather, nothing bad happens in either option.

How do you play this or that with a group?

Pass the phone around. The player whose turn it is taps their pick, sees what other players chose, and hands the phone on. You can also read the pairs on this page out loud and have everyone point left or right.

Where do the percentages come from?

From taps on this site. Each pick adds one anonymous count to that pair. Few picks means a rough number, and the page says so. The privacy page has the details.

Is this or that safe for kids?

Yes. Every pair is family-friendly, and none mentions alcohol, dating or anything scary. Younger children may need help with a few of the pairs about school or work.

How many players can play?

From 2 to 10 on one phone. Everyone sees the same 200 pairs in random order, and the game remembers which ones you have already answered on this device.

What is the difference from would you rather?

Would you rather asks you to give something up. This or that only asks which of two things you like better, so the answers are quicker and easier to share. For harder dilemmas, try the would you rather game.
