How to play the newlywed game
- Pick your couples. Two to five couples on chairs in front of the room. Give every player a whiteboard or a stack of cards and a marker.
- Send one partner away. In round one, one partner from each couple leaves the room or puts on headphones with music playing.
- Ask the questions. The host reads a question, and the partner who stayed writes down how the missing partner will answer. Write first, talk later.
- Bring them back. The host reads each question again. The returning partner says an answer, then the other one turns the card around. A match scores 1 point.
- Swap roles. In round two the other partner leaves, with a new set of questions.
- Play the bonus. Finish with one bonus question worth 3 points. The couple with the most points wins.
Choose the questions before the party and print them, so the host never has to scroll in front of the room.

The shoe game: a quicker version for the reception
The couple sits back to back, each holding one of their own shoes and one of their partner’s. The host asks a question from the who is more likely to list, and both raise the shoe of the person they pick. When the two shoes differ, ask each partner to explain.
It needs no whiteboards and no second room, so it fits between courses or right after the first dance. Ten questions are plenty.
Tips for the host
- Match the list to the crowd. At a bridal shower, use firsts, favorites and life at home. At a reception, the wedding list and the shoe game. At an anniversary party, the future and bonus lists.
- Ask open questions in round one. “What did your partner order on your first date?” gets a story. Save the one-word bonus facts for the end.
- Slow down the reveal. Read the predicted answer out loud, wait a moment, then let the partner turn the card.
- Give a small prize. A bottle of wine, a dinner voucher or a framed photo of the winning couple’s faces at the reveal.
- Keep the date night list for adults. Check the guest list before you use it.
Where the newlywed game comes from
The Newlywed Game was a TV game show. It debuted on ABC on July 11, 1966, created by Nick Nicholson and E. Roger Muir and hosted by Bob Eubanks. Four newly married couples played. One spouse from each couple left the stage while the other predicted their answers, couples scored points for every match, and the roles were reversed in the second round.
The party version keeps that format and drops the TV prizes. The questions on this page are new, written for any couple.
Frequently asked questions
How many newlywed game questions should we ask?
Ten per round is a good number. With two rounds (each partner answers once) and a bonus question, a game for three or four couples is short enough to hold a crowd.
Can engaged couples play?
Yes. Skip the wedding and honeymoon list, or turn those questions into plans: where the honeymoon will be instead of where it was.
What do players write their answers on?
Small whiteboards and markers are the classic choice. Index cards or sheets of paper work too. Print the score sheet on this page so the host can keep the totals.
Can we play with only one couple?
Yes. Score the couple out of the number of questions, then play again on your anniversary and try to beat it. At a shower, guests can also guess before the partner answers.
Are these questions OK for a family crowd?
All of them are written to be safe for a mixed crowd. The date night list is flirty, so leave it out if children or grandparents are playing.
Is this page free to print?
Yes. Print the lists and the score sheet as often as you like, for any party. There is nothing to sign up for.
