How to play draw and guess with this generator

  1. Choose a mode. Team game keeps score for two to four teams. Word generator just hands you a word.
  2. Pick difficulty and category. Start Easy. Mix categories if the group is large.
  3. Show the word to the drawer only. Hand the phone to the drawer. They tap Show me the word, read it, then tap Hide word and start timer.
  4. Draw against the clock. The drawer draws on paper or a whiteboard while the team guesses out loud.
  5. Score the turn. Tap Guessed it! +1 point, or let the timer run out. The phone moves to the next team.

Rules of draw and guess

  • No letters, numbers or written words in the drawing.
  • No talking, mouthing or pointing at objects in the room.
  • Guessers can call out as many guesses as they like. The drawer can nod or shake their head, but cannot say anything.
  • One point for each word guessed in time. The first team to reach the target score wins. Pick 5, 10, 15 or no limit in More options, and end the game any time from the team screen.
  • A team may skip once per turn. The skipped word does not come back during the session.

What easy, medium and hard words mean

We sorted words by how few strokes it takes to make them recognizable, not by how long they are. Easy words are one shape. Medium words need two or three parts. Hard words describe an action, an idea or a place that has to be suggested with props.

CategoryWordsEasy examplesHard examples
Animals45cat, dog, fishchameleon, platypus
Food and drink45apple, pizza, bananalasagna, birthday cake
Objects45house, ball, keyescalator, vacuum cleaner
Actions45jumping, sleeping, eatingprocrastinating, recycling
Places45beach, school, tree houseEiffel Tower, Great Wall
Fun and fantasy45ghost, robot, dragontime machine, haunted mansion

If a word frustrates the whole table, skip it. A good draw-and-guess round feels like a near miss, not a puzzle.

Draw and guess variations

  • One-line challenge. The drawer cannot lift the pen once they start.
  • Weak hand. Draw with your non-dominant hand. It evens the field between confident and nervous artists.
  • Eyes closed. The drawer shuts their eyes. Everyone laughs; guessing becomes harder than it sounds.
  • Relay. A team of three takes turns adding to the same drawing in 15-second slices.
  • Telephone. Pass one word around: draw it, then the next person writes what they see, then the next draws that.

Playing with a bigger group? Try the imposter game, which scales to twelve players and uses the same pass-the-phone rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as Pictionary?

The idea is the same: one player draws, everyone else guesses. Our word lists are our own, and the generator works with any pen, paper or whiteboard. You do not need the board game.

Do I draw on the phone?

No. The phone shows the word, runs the timer and keeps score. The drawer uses paper, a whiteboard or a tablet. That keeps the phone free for the next team.

How do the difficulty levels work?

Easy words are one shape, such as an apple. Medium words have a few parts or a small scene, such as a lighthouse. Hard words are ideas or actions, such as procrastinating. Start with Easy for children and mixed-age groups.

How long should a round be?

Sixty seconds works for most groups. Use 30 seconds for Easy words with kids, and 90 or 120 seconds when you play Hard words.

Can I skip a word?

Each team can skip once per turn. The skipped word is not repeated in the same session, and there is no penalty.

Do I need teams?

No. Choose Word generator on the first screen to get one word at a time with an optional timer. Choose Team game when you want turns, team names and a scoreboard for two to four teams.

Is the Pictionary word generator free?

Yes. All 270 words, the timer and team scores are free, with no sign-up.
