Which list for which group
| Group | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New coworkers | Food, then travel | Nobody has to reveal anything personal, and everybody eats. |
| Old friends | Hard, then adults | People who know each other can push back on a bad answer. |
| Teens | Funny, then superpowers | Fast, silly and easy to argue about. |
| A long drive | Travel, then seasons | You are already on a trip, so everyone has an opinion. |
| A first date | Food, then hard | Start light. The hard ones show how someone thinks. |
Read a question to yourself before you ask it. If you can guess what everyone at the table will say, skip it.
Four ways to play with a list
- Hot seat. One player answers five questions in a row with no time to think. The table guesses each answer first.
- Majority points. Everyone who ends up on the bigger side gets a point. After ten questions, the player who read the room best wins.
- One a day. Post one question in a group chat each morning and collect the answers by lunch.
- Bracket. Take the winning option from one question and pit it against the winner of the next. See which option survives five rounds.
Writing your own would you rather questions
Start with something people want, then attach a cost to it. “Get free coffee forever” is not a question. “Get free coffee forever, but only decaf” against “pay double for the real thing” is.
Test a new question on one person before the group. If they answer in under a second, the two sides are not balanced yet. Change one detail, such as the number, the length of time or who else is involved, and try again.
Frequently asked questions
How many would you rather questions are on this page?
150, in 7 lists. None of them repeat the 240 questions in the would you rather game, so you can use both.
Can I vote on these questions?
Not on this page. This page is a list for reading out loud. The game has its own 240 questions, and there you tap a side and see how other players voted.
Are these questions OK for kids?
Most are, but the adults list is about jobs, rent and dating, so it bores children at best. For a younger group, use the Kids deck in the would you rather game.
What makes a would you rather question good?
Both sides have to hurt a little. If one option is obviously better, everyone picks it and nobody has a reason to talk.
Can I use these in a class or a meeting?
Yes. The food, travel, superpower and seasons lists are safe for a classroom or an office. Skip the adults list at work.
